“Compounding disasters” has become the emergency management buzz-phrase of the 2020s. The changed climate has brought disaster after disaster, and some communities can’t recover from the most recent disaster before another ruins progress towards normalcy.
Given our changed climate, businesses need to prepare for unparalleled events beyond anything experienced in history. What previously was a 500-year event, could soon be a 10- to 20-year event. Response plans need to consider these changes so businesses are able to recover. It’s time to shift the focus away from the causes of climate change because the climate already changed. Response plans also need to be dynamic – not static – as the climate is likely to change further in the coming years. This presentation will explain the need to adapt response plans to the future climate. It will also include examples of how response plans can be made dynamic and ways to ensure effectiveness and meet the changing needs of today and the future.
