October Focus: What’s Hiding in YourContinuity Plan?
Hello ACP Members,
October brings cooler weather, shorter days, and, of course, Halloween. While ghosts and monsters may belong in haunted houses, there are a few things hiding in our business continuity programs that can be just as frightening.
I'm talking about those risks and assumptions that quietly find their way into our plans.
Maybe it's a critical vendor that everyone assumes will always be available. Perhaps it's a manual workaround that hasn't actually been tested in several years. It could be an outdated contact list, a recovery strategy built around technology that has changed, or that one employee who seems to be the only person who knows how a critical process really works.
Those are the things that should keep continuity professionals awake at night!
October is a good time to shine a flashlight into some of those darker corners of our programs. Look beyond whether a plan was reviewed or an exercise was completed. Ask whether the strategies would actually work under today's operating conditions. Challenge long-standing assumptions, talk with the people performing critical processes, and look for dependencies that may not be obvious on an organizational chart or BIA.
I also encourage you to ask a simple question during your next exercise: "What are we assuming will still be available?" The answers may reveal some of your most important vulnerabilities.
A mature continuity program isn't one without surprises. It's one that continually looks for them before they become disruptions.
So, this October, enjoy the costumes, haunted houses, and scary movies but don't let the truly frightening things be the ones hiding in your continuity plans.
Have a safe and happy Halloween!
